How to check car tyres (and what to do about It)

Driving a car is a regular part of many people's daily routines. However, we can sometimes forget that our trusty four-wheeled buddy may face some issues. Hence, it's essential to check your car's tyres frequently to ensure they are in good shape.

In this guide, we'll explore why and how to check your car tyres to ensure a safer and smoother journey.

The Importance of Tyre Maintenance

When it comes to vehicle safety, tyres are arguably one of the most critical components. Tyres are essential for your car's performance and safety because they are the only part that touches the road.

Proper tyre maintenance can help you avoid accidents, save money, and extend the life of your tyres. Whether you do short drives or long journeys, tyre maintenance is crucial.

Check these five tyre qualities often to ensure road safety and prevent tyre damage. Let's take a look.

1. Check Your Car's Tyre Pressures

Why:

Incorrect tyre pressure can lead to a variety of issues.  This includes reduced fuel efficiency, decreased handling, and an increased risk of dangerous blowouts.

How:

  1. Check the recommended PSI: Begin by checking your car's vehicle handbook for the correct tyre pressure. You may also find this inside the driver's door sill or the inside of the fuel tank flap. Manufacturers often express this information in PSI (pounds per square inch) or Bar units.

  2. Check the tyre pressure with a pressure gauge: Use a reliable tyre pressure gauge to check each tyre's pressure. Do this when your tyres are cool, preferably before a drive. Remove the valve cap, attach the gauge firmly to the valve stem, and read the pressure on the gauge.

  3. Increase the tyre pressure: If the pressure is too low, inflate the tyre to the recommended level. At a local car garage, you can insert an air pump into the tyre valve. Squeeze the trigger in short bursts until the PSI or Bar reading matches your vehicle's recommended tyre pressure.

  4. Decrease the tyre pressure: If the tyre pressure is too high, release some air until it reaches the correct pressure. You should hear a hissing noise — this lets you know the air is escaping.

  5. Check the spare tyre: Remember to verify the spare tyre's pressure, too.

Filling your tyre with compressed air is fine, but we can inflate your tyres with Nitrogen at our Ayrshire branch. Nitrogen tyre inflation improves tyre life, reduces COâ‚‚ emissions, and maintains tyre pressure for longer.

2. Check Your Tyre Tread Depth and Wears

Why:

The tyre tread depth directly affects your car's grip on the road. Insufficient tread can reduce traction, especially in wet or icy conditions, increasing the risk of accidents.

How:

  1. 20p test: To check tread depth, you can use a tread depth gauge or the 20p test. Insert a 20p coin into the tread groove. If the tyre covers the coin's outer band, the tread depth is over the legal limit, and you're good to go. But if the coin's outer band isn't covered, your tread depth may be under the legal limit. In technical terms, the groove depth shouldn't be less than 1.6 mm. If it is, call your local car garage immediately. Here at Andrew Dodds Autocare in Ayr, we can resolve any tyre issues.

  2. Check central 3/4 of the tyre: The law states that the tyre mustn't be less than 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. This must go all the way around the tyre.

  3. Look for wear and tear: You should also look for signs of uneven wear, like bald spots, which could indicate alignment or suspension issues. Bald tyres can lead to loss of control, hydroplaning, and poor braking. If you notice such wear, consult our car garage in Ayr for repairs.

  4. Inspect the sidewalls: Regularly inspect the sidewalls for any cuts, bulges, or other signs of damage. These could weaken the tyre's structure and pose a safety risk.

>>>WARNING>>>

If your tyres are below the legal limit, you may receive three penalty points on your license. Additionally, you could be fined up to £2,500 per tyre. If you have four illegal tyres, that equals 12 penalty points and £10,000 in fines. So ensure you check your tread depth regularly — we recommend every 2-4 weeks.

3. Check Balancing and Alignment

Why:

Properly balanced wheels ensure even wear and a smoother ride. Imbalanced wheels and poorly inflated tyres cause uneven wear, lower fuel consumption, and affect how well you can control your vehicle.

How:

  1. Get your wheels checked regularly: Schedule regular wheel balancing and vehicle alignment checks with our qualified mechanics. We can also check this during your regular car service. The team will use specialised equipment to balance your wheels correctly. We can also check your vehicle's alignment - just ask us at the time of booking.

  2. Take note of steering issues: If you notice your car pulling to one side, steering wheel vibrations, or uneven tread wear, get your tyres checked for balance and alignment issues.

4. Spare Tyre Care

Why:

Your spare tyre can be a lifesaver in emergencies. But it's useless if it isn't in good condition. It's crucial to maintain your spare tyre so you can use it when needed.

How:

  1. Check tyre pressure: Check the spare tyre's pressure regularly, just like your regular tyres.

  2. Inspect for damage:  Inspect it for signs of damage, such as cracks or punctures, and replace it if necessary.

  3. Learn how to change a tyre: Make sure you're prepared to change a tyre if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road. It's important to have the necessary tools and know-how to handle this type of emergency.
